NRSC conducts its 5th high-level meeting on road safety on Feb 16th, 2009

On February 16th, 2009, the National Road Safety Committee of the Royal Government of Cambodia held its 5th meeting at the Sunway Hotel in Phnom Penh Cambodia. The meeting was chaired by HE Tram Iv Tek, Minister of the Public Works and Transport Ministry, who stressed his support for the meeting and the road safety action plan. Representatives from all ministries were present, as well as representatives from the Cambodia Red Cross, Handicap International Belgium, World Health Organization, and JICA.

The agenda included a presentation on NRSC’s three year report 2006-2008, as well as an outline of the Committee’s two year action plan 2009-2010. Representative from the Ministry of Interior gave a report on the progress of the helmet enforcement in the 24 Cambodian provinces. In addition, the National Road Safety Policy was approved by the Committee.

Following the presentations, various members made recommendations to the NRSC including:

  1. Begin enforcement of speeding and drink-driving - the two factors involved in the majority of road traffic accidents in Cambodia
  2. Continue and step-up helmet enforcement. Evidence has demonstrated that enforcement has raised the helmet wearing rates but enforcement must continue to change motorcycle rider behavior
  3. The NRSC must develop a strategy to secure sustainable funding from government, private sector and donors to fund the National Road Safety Action Plan

All presentations and reports are available below for download in both Khmer and English.
